In my opinion she did die, I mean, she was 100 years old and when she dropped the necklace into the water, I think that meant she was finally "at peace" so to speak. Her "heart" was back with Jack, in the ocean. You don't have to be sick to die, especially when you are old like that. Maybe she was just hanging on until the right moment, its been known to happen. And she was on that ship when she died, where the Titanic sunk and where Jack died.

yeah, exactly, she was "at peace",so why should she die now?!
i mean, the whole story wasn't kind of wearing,so that i could say"well, now i can die cos i liberated my soul"or something like that....in my view she just is fine with herself now ....

Because she was 100 years old and the only way for her to really be with Jack again would be to die honestly. Just my opinion though ;)

The multiple times that I've seen the movie, it never even crossed my mind that she could've died. For me the telling of the story had just brought back some old memories, and in the night she dreamt of an idealization of those combined memories.

Last year I was watching the movie for the first time with people who were actually discussing it, and there I first heard that apparently a lot of people thought she died. And the more I contemplated that, the more likely does it seem to me, in a poetic, artistic way.
Rose told her story, she had a fulfilling life, she's old, she can de exactly the way Jack told her on his metaphorical deathbed. The 'dream' in this version is rather her afterlife than an actual dream: She reunites with all those who died on the Titanic, and most importantly, she reunites with Jack. The dress she was wearing in that scene strongly reminded me of a wedding dress, so if you want some more symbolic meaning, it could be interpreted as her finally binding to her true love, as her entering afterlife marking the beginning of her now eternal time with Jack.

Or maybe I'm just reading way too much into that scene...

Rose did die. She brought onboard everything that she owned to tell them the story of Titanic. In the end she past away and her soul for the look of it returned to the Titanic.

James Cameron won't say one way or another in his book (I cannot remember if it was James Cameron's Titanic or the screenplay book but it was in one of the two). I think she did die, which is sad, but I really liked the ending where she and Jack were reunited.
